For the sake of it

Grace for the sake of grace;

not for good karma,

or a networking opportunity,

or even to be a good person.

Just because once you discover that it’s possible,

once you feel the way it defies gravity,

and lifts you out of the quicksand

you didn’t even know you were sinking in,

you don’t think twice.

You don’t ask if they deserve it,

or you deserve it,

or whether boundaries will stay intact,

because grace is a different animal altogether

from people pleasing,

or codependency,

or existential exchange.

It’s just there for its own sake,

like wonder

and love.

Like when you pause to gaze at the clouds that look like spools of cotton pulled a tad too far until they rip open in the middle, revealing the blue fabric beneath them,

or like the heart palpitating awe when someone is mid-sentence and you suddenly realize how very lucky you are to be here,

in a body,

with ears to listen,

as their separate but shared reality spills out on something as intangible as air vibrations.

Wonder for the sake of wonder.

Love for the sake of love.

Grace for the sake of grace,

all stripping away the pretenses and hesitations,

as if you never knew what it was to hold your tongue against the back of your teeth to avoid saying those three words aloud,

or you never shied away from a job,

or a resolution,

or offering a hug,

because it might not work out.

That’s what it’s all about.

it’s why the journey is worth every step,

even if you’re the kind of person who has to take the backroads and probably get lost a few times before you figure out where you’re going.

Realizing the absurdity of waiting for a reason,

for a permission slip,

or a passing grade,

before you admit that even they were just for the sake of themselves.

So why not let your tongue loose and say the words that are stuck in the back of your throat,

or stop asking for a break and start growing something pliable instead,

or forget why anything ever needed a reason at all,

beyond living,

for the sake of living,

wonder

for the sake of wonder,

grace

for the sake of grace,

and love

for the sake of love.
